Your Calm Bedroom, Your Oasis

Oct 2, 2025 | News

A calm bedroom is more than just a well-designed and decorated space. Your bedroom affects your well-being, daily energy and long-term health.

Here is why it’s so important to have a peaceful pleasant space to retreat to:

Stages of Sleep

Your bedroom sets the stage for quality sleep. Ideally we have about eight to ten hours of sleep a day. As an Adult working full time with a family, it likely reduces to about six hours a day. Out of the six hours, only about 50 minutes is actual deep sleep called ‘Deep’. This is the best part of the sleep. The other four or five hours is called the ‘Core’ where it is not as deep but still good sleep. Then there is the ‘REM’ known as Rapid Eye Movement which is about an hour or two. After that it the ‘Awake’ stage. This might happen once or a few times during your sleep. It is alright to awake at night if you might find yourself in an uncomfortable position, have to use the bathroom or need a glass of water. Hopefully it is only physical and a normal awakening. Let’s review ways to prevent physical sleep distractions in your bedroom.

Setting the Mood

A calm, uncluttered and soothing environment reduces stimulation, helping your mind and body shift into rest mode. Good sleep supports emotional balance, memory, immune health and focus for the next day.

Emotional Balance

Retreating to a well looked after, calm bedroom gives you the opportunity to reset. Your space is a sanctuary where stress hormones can be minimized making it more manageable. You are able to maintain perspective and emotional balance when you are calm in your space.

Mental Clarity

Clutter, harsh lighting and over stimulation can create mental noise. A serene space fosters clarity and peace of mind, making it easier to reflect, read, or simply breathe without distraction.

Personal Wellness & Relationships

A tranquil retreat allows for moments of self-care and intimacy. Whether that means quiet time alone, sharing with a partner, or reconnecting with yourself, a calm bedroom encourages emotional connection and balance.

Pray Before you Sleep

Be thankful for the day and focus on the good things that happened today. Be grateful for your bed and shelter, the healthy meal that you had today, the clean sheets that you are in, the family and friends that you have and say your thank you in your prayer. If there is something you need, ask for it in your prayer. If playing calming music such as classical, or nature sounds from birds to rain to waves and wind helps you sleep turn it on low. Perhaps your fan calms you. Reading a good relaxing book or listening to one is also helpful to enter your deep sleep.

Keep your Bedroom dark and free of noise

Depending on your schedule or routine; you might either prefer to have black-out window coverings to allow you to sleep beyond the sunrise or to dim bright street lights outside your window. If your routine is waking up with the sunrise then semi-sheer window coverings will offer partial privacy and at the same time enjoyment of the sunrise that will wake you up softly in lieu of an alarm. Sleeping with the window open brings in the fresh air if the weather permits. If you plan to sleep past 7am you will hear sounds that might not be a part of nature if there are construction improvements occurring in your area as this is the typical time they are allowed to begin. You might want to adjust what days of the week you keep the windows open and which layer of your window coverings you choose to keep open the night before depending on what day of the week it is and what your schedule is like for the morning ahead.

A Sense of Sanctuary

Your bedroom is the most private room in your home.  Designing and decorating it as a calm retreat creates a safe haven where you feel grounded and protected.

Tip & Overall Feel

Less is more. Every item in your bedroom should bring you joy, comfort and peace otherwise it is clutter.  Soft, layered, natural and clutter-free. A space that feels timeless and restorative will invite you to exhale as soon as you enter.

A calm bedroom isn’t just “nice to have” – it’s a daily investment in your health, happiness and resilience.

Here are some practical design tips you can review at your Consultation with Ania and on your own:

Lighting

  • Layer your lighting: Have the option of task (reading and cleaning: directional wall sconces or dedicated pot lights) to ambient (overhead chandelier) to accent lighting (candles, sconces, dimable fixtures).
  • Warm lighting tones: Choose warm bulbs instead of cool white. They are gentler on the eyes and avoid migraine triggers.
  • Natural Light: Use sheer curtains during the day if you require semi privacy and semi or complete blackout drapes at night for restful sleep if there is too much brightness for you outside of your window.

Colour & Finishes

  • Soft muted palettes: Warm whites, gentle blues, or earthy tones reduce stimulation which is best to avoid before sleep.
  • Matte Finishes: Avoid overly shiny surfaces which may reflect too much light and energy.
  • Consistency: Soft colours that flow consistently throughout the walls, bedding, window coverings, décor and lighting will create a sense of harmony.

Furniture & Floor Plan

  • Focus on the bed as a focal point: Your bed should be the centerpiece. It should look and be comfortable with layered bedding. Wash your sheets at least once a week and your pillowcases daily if possible.
  • Nightstands: Refrain from over stuffing them. Minimize to just a lamp (wall light sconce is even better if possible), a book, glass of water. Maybe a natural candle or oil diffuser. Stay away from artificial scents that can irritate your sinuses and possible wake you with a headache.
  • Decluttered space: Maintain easy circulation with minimal furniture and good air flow.

Textures & Materials

  • Natural fabrics: Your bedsheets, pillow cases and covers should be of a natural fabric: cotton, linen, silk or wool for comfort and breathability.
  • Wood & Stone: Natural materials ground the space and connect you with nature. From flooring to furniture to accessories. Be mindful of the products you bring into your home. Avoid allergy triggering items.
  • Layered textures: Add blanket throws, area rugs and cushions to bring in warmth and softness.

Atmosphere & Accents

  • Plants: A few of your favourite plants can purify the air and bring you calmness. Some examples of good bedroom plants are; Palm plants, Peace Lily, Snake Plant, fragrant Lavender and Jasmine and sleep inducing Aloe Vera.
  • Scents: Diffuse natural lavender, chamomile or sandalwood essential oils for relaxation.
  • Sound: A fan or soft music can further enhance the space.
  • Art: Abstract or nature-inspired art in muted tones framed simply. Photos of your loved ones.
  • Personal Touches: A curated tray on the nightstand with a book, candle, and carafe of water.
