Great design rarely begins with a finished product — it begins with an idea, a conversation, and a clear understanding of how people live in their space.
This staircase transformation is a perfect example of how my design process works at AVA INTERIOR DESIGN. What you see in the completed “after” photo started as a hand-drawn sketch at my desk, followed by in-depth conversations with both the homeowners and trusted trades. Every line on paper represented intention: proportion, safety, flow, and beauty.
The Design Journey
The original staircase was functional, but it lacked presence and warmth. From the outset, the goal was to elevate it into an architectural feature — something that felt custom, timeless, and seamlessly integrated into the home.
I began by sketching a railing concept that balanced classic detailing with a modern sensibility. From there, I collaborated closely with the homeowners to refine the vision and worked directly with skilled trades to ensure every detail was executed properly. On-site discussions, material samples, and thoughtful adjustments were all part of the process.
The result is a beautifully finished staircase with a custom metal railing, warm wood handrail, elegant brass detailing, and a soft runner that adds both comfort and texture. Each element was carefully chosen to enhance not just the staircase itself, but the experience of moving through the home.

Design is not just about selecting finishes — it’s about guiding a project from concept to completion. Clear communication, attention to detail, and respect for both the home and the people living in it are essential. This collaborative approach ensures that the final result feels intentional, personal, and enduring.
