One of my favourite parts of design is sourcing beautiful materials and discovering finishes that can completely transform a space.
Recently, I visited AVRA Tile in Etobicoke to explore tile, stone and decorative mosaics for upcoming client projects. From timeless natural stone and soft neutral finishes to intricate patterns and statement mosaics, there was plenty of inspiration.
But beautiful materials are only the beginning.
More Than Choosing What Looks Beautiful
When renovating, building or refreshing a property, there can be an overwhelming number of decisions. A tile may look beautiful on its own, but how will it relate to the cabinetry, countertop, flooring, wall colour, lighting, plumbing fixtures and architecture of the space?
This is where my education and experience become especially valuable to my clients.
I graduated from OCAD in 1999 after completing the four-year Interior & Environmental Design program. My background as a qualified Environmental Designer taught me to consider much more than decoration alone.
Environmental Design looks at the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. It considers how interior and built environments function and feel, including space planning, circulation, scale, proportion, materials, lighting, colour, ergonomics and the overall experience of a space.
That foundation continues to influence the way I approach every project today.
Looking at the Entire Space
When I help a client select finishes, I don’t look at each item independently. I consider how all the elements will work together and how the finished environment will function for the people using it.
Scale, proportion, colour, undertones, texture, pattern, natural and artificial light, durability and the architectural character of the property all matter.
Sometimes successful design isn’t about selecting the most expensive material. It is about choosing the right material, using it in the right place and ensuring it works beautifully with everything around it.
From Tile Selection to the Final Details
